A Global Vision for Akassa Local Government Area
Ambassador Hunter Halder is internationally recognized for founding the Re-food Movement in Lisbon, Portugal, an initiative dedicated to rescuing safe surplus food that would otherwise be wasted and redistributing it to families in need. Beginning as a small volunteer effort during the financial crisis, the movement expanded into a nationally recognized community programme with thousands of volunteers and multiple operational centres throughout Portugal, inspiring similar initiatives in other countries.
The European Commission has highlighted Hunter Halder’s work as an example of community leadership in reducing food waste, promoting food security and supporting sustainable development through citizen participation.
Drawing upon this internationally recognized experience, Ambassador Hunter Halder seeks to work with Akassa Local Government Area, traditional institutions, local communities, fishermen, farmers, markets, businesses, humanitarian organizations, development agencies, the Nigerian diaspora and international partners to explore practical food recovery, food security and environmental sustainability initiatives tailored to local needs throughout Akassa Local Government Area and, where partnerships permit, across the wider Niger Delta region.
